3 Tips for Choosing a Reliable Halal Caterer Amid Coronavirus Outbreak
As of March 7, 2020, Singapore reported a total of 138 coronavirus cases. However, there’s nothing to panic because the government has taken adequate measures to contain the disease. In fact, 90 of the 138 patients were already cured and discharged from the hospital.
So, if you are planning to host an event, what precautions should you take to stay safe? First of all, make sure your halal food catering services follow food safety best practices as recommended by The World Health Organization. Here are three tips for choosing a halal caterer in the face of coronavirus fears.
1. Check background and reputation
Make sure your halal caterer has a successful track record of maintaining high hygiene standards. Also, check their reputation for following food safety guidelines as recommended by the MOH. As a precautionary measure, your caterer should avoid serving any uncooked meals at this time. So, how long should you cook? Scientists say that a heat treatment of at least 70 degrees Celsius is enough to ensure complete elimination of any virus from the food.
2) Ensure proper hand washing
Check if your halal catering company has a strict hygiene policy for its staffers and food preparers. For instance, a proper hand washing technique entails that everyone should clean their hands and arms with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds.
3) Frequency of hand-wash
Ideally, staffers of your halal caterer should wash their hands multiple times throughout the day. For instance, they should wash hands after they a) handle raw foods, b) sneeze or cough, c) use the restroom, d) touch other body parts, e) eat, drink or smoke a cigarette. If possible, pay a visit to one of their events and see how they typically follow hygiene practices. Also, check if they frequently clean the cooking area and surroundings to prevent any potential spreading of the virus.
